M.I.A. Wins Golden Globe For Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack
M.I.A. was a winner this week at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles. The rapper was part of a duo, with A.R. Rahman, that composed the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, which won Best Original Score For A Motion Picture.
The score is central to the modern grit and uplifting humanity that pervades Danny Boyle's intoxicating film. Says Rahman, "We wanted it edgy, upfront. Danny wanted it loud."
M.I.A. previously recorded much of her album Kala inside Rahman's Indian studio, although the two had never worked together until collaborating on the soundtrack's rumbling "O...Saya." Within the film, "O...Saya" is the kind of cinematic moment where image and sound co-exist. Inspired, M.I.A. made the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack the first release on her N.E.E.T. label (acronym for Not in Education, Employment or Training).
This award season M.I.A.'s poised for honors garnered not only by N.E.E.T.'s Slumdog Soundtrack, but the Grammys she is up for off her own album, Kala (nominated for Record Of The Year "Paper Planes," and Best Rap Song "Swagga Like Us").
A Golden Globe for M.I.A.'s first label release, top of iTunes and nominated for three Grammy's. Oscar anyone?
